Green Libraries week starts today.
This year Libraries Week - the annual event that helps libraries across the country run engagement events for their communities – has gone green!
Libraries from Jersey to John O’Groats are taking part with activities that include, ‘Make A Bird Feeder’, ‘Turn Trash into Treasure’ and a drop-in session to learn about carbon footprint calculations and reduction ideas.

Green Libraries Week was inspired by CILIP’s Green Libraries Initiative that connects libraries across England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland to support them with Green Initiatives.
The first round of funding was completed earlier this year, and culminated in the inaugural Green Libraries Conference, where the idea of Green Libraries Week was born.
This year, Green Libraries Week runs from Monday 2 to Sunday 8 October, and features over 250 (and counting!) events and activities in 176 libraries that centre around sustainability and climate action.
A few of the events happening this week:
- Greening your home - Camberley library, Surrey
- Build your own recycled bird boxes – The Word Library, Newcastle
- Eco Pledge and Bulb Planting – Lyme Regis Library, Dorset
- Make your own eco-friendly plant pot – Warsop Library, Nottinghamshire
- Exhibition and blog series – London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine Library, London
- Ask a gardener – where they will give away garlic to grow over the winter! - Larbet Library, Larbet, Scotland
- Bean in a jar – Burngreave Library, Sheffield
Visit Green Libraries Week for more info on the events and how your library can get involved next year.
